source with some "hidden"/not too well known music sites i've discovered and like...and a couple more well known ones.

BIRP!

short for "Blalock's Indie/Rock Playlist"... here's a description from birp's about page... "BIRP is a monthly compilation of +100 tracks that are free to stream / download...It's my way of helping to promote all the independent bands I know and love and to give the listener a chance to get to hear something new."

sadly, birp took down the download option from their site a while ago, but you can get an extension from google chrome right here which brings the feature back.

everynoise.com

oh my fucking GOD. i love this site. gigantic genremap trying to compile as many genres and bands under them as it can. here's what the site bio says, i'll paste it all here since it's a bit difficult to navigate first visit. (and i'm saving your time here, because it's all the way at the bottom.)

"Every Noise at Once is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 5,187 genre-shaped distinctions by Spotify as of (date here). The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier.

Click anything to hear an example of what it sounds like.

Click the ยป on a genre to see a map of its artists.

Be calmly aware that this may periodically expand, contract or combust."

you can also look up your favorite band and see which genres they fall under. it's kind of hidden away, though. scroll all the way right at the top of the page and you should find it there.

last.fm

yeah, when i said well known this is kind of what i meant. i love this site, it's 10x easier than stalking your spotify friend activity and it gets you into the habit of listening to the WHOLE song. (last.fm is a music tracking site, every track you listen to is a "scrobble", and in order to get your music "scrobbled" you must listen to the whole track entirely through--but this doesn't work on 8tracks, if you use that and want to cheat.

oh, and check out my last.fm too.

topsters.....2!

i used this on my about page. lets you compile 9, 40, 42, or 100 albums onto a nice little collage, with the names right on the side. that's really all there is to this site. there's a movie option too, if you're that kind of person.

wikplayer

it's the music player i use on my webpage! really customizable and really easy to set up.

8tracks

less of a hidden gem and more of a dead one, i used to use this a lot in 2014-15 and then forgot about it when i moved out of fandom space (clearly i'm back now) and started focusing more on real life. then i learned it died......then i learned it came back. now i frequent it! fun for themed playlists, only lets you listen to each playlist once every 8 hours. all the songs you play on this site get scrobbled, even if you don't finish them!
